The Suffolks of Cheltenham

Come for a little wander with me in the Suffolks of Cheltenham…

A slice of 'Birthday cake' with butter cream and sprinkles on a marble café table.

We started the day in Montpellier Gardens, which is a really lovely town park with a great children’s playground and two cafés of its own, then moseyed down to Sorrel Stores. I’ve only ever had a takeaway hot chocolate there before that I shared with my daughter (and in the end drank most of it – I’m still the biggest chocolate lover clearly) on a chilly Sunday Suffolks market day earlier this year. It gets busy quickly at Sorrel Stores and it can be tricky to snap up one of the window seats but we managed to this time and the atmosphere was everything you want it to be in a hipster café. It’s aesthetic, it’s artsy, it’s cool and most importantly, the food is delicious.

Once we’d finished our food we decided to explore downstairs beneath the café where I knew there would be a selection of exotic plants from The Aroid Attic – sister to the original independent house plant shop on Bath Road in Cheltenham. As expected, everything was gorgeous and I ended up buying a few bits to look after my current house plant selection at home. Both Aroid Attic shops are fun and definitely worth visiting (they feel completely different to each other honestly); the good thing about this one is that there is more room to look around although the Bath Road store does seem to have more of a variety of plants.

In this little (almost secret feeling) basement shop I also came across the work of artist Amelia Jayne. There were a selection of her prints here that I don’t think I’ve come across before but I’m now a huge fan. This is everything I want in my new little kitchen. I like to buy art that makes me happy when I walk into a room and I can see these prints doing just that.

We left Sorrel Stores and I had planned to make the journey back home when I saw this puppy on the door step of a little pre-loved fashion boutique across the road called Mint Clothing Agency. I asked the owner if we could pet the dog who I learned is called Nancy (Nancy was on my baby names list before we settled on my daughter’s name!) and whilst my little girl cuddled the puppy I had a look around. I’d never been in the shop before and I regret that now because there weren’t so many items that it was daunting, the items had been carefully picked so it was easy to find things I liked. It’s safe to say I’ll be keeping my eye on this little independent clothing store and will be shopping here again.

And there you have it, that was my cosy, wholesome morning in the Suffolks of Cheltenham! The best days are spent eating cake, shopping and playing with puppies I think. Comment with your favourite shopping nooks and coffee spots 🙂
