What do I mean by bad editing? Poor photo quality, overly loud audio on videos, improperly sized images… the list goes on. Am I being dramatic when I say these bad practices could be negatively affecting your business? Unfortunately not. Here’s why:
First impressions really do count.
How much time do you give to a social media account or website when you don’t like the look of it in those first few seconds? I’ll bet you none, you quickly leave the page. If a photo appears on your social media feed and you think the quality is off or the aesthetic is old fogey, you most likely either forget the account advertised entirely or worse – you now associate it negatively.
So what should you do?
In my opinion, less is more. Yes the social media algorithms and search engines reward users and website creators who post content often but if it’s bad content then you’re probably doing more harm than good. Rushed content can be viewed as spammy and desperate, sending potential new customers in the opposite direction. Remember, the online world is a big place and highly saturated. Yes you should do your best to tick all the boxes the algorithm requires to fight competitors and reach the largest audience possible but the most advantageous way to market your business online is to create a loyal following of customers who actually spend money.

My advice would be to strike a balance (that’s always the way isn’t it?) – Spend time on your content, really think who it’s for and what you want viewers to feel or come away with after viewing it. What is the call to action? What’s the process involved in that call to action? Is it user friendly? Make sure your audio isn’t abrasive, ensure your photos are attractive and make people want to spend time on a post. Videos must be engaging for people to watch the whole way through. To do all of this, you’ll need to spend a lot more time than if you were just churning out media.
In my experience, spending time on media so the result is beautiful and the quality is clear to see almost always yields results. Even if the like count isn’t exactly what you hoped for (sometimes it’s amazing, sometimes it’s just okay and at the end of the day, it’s inconsequential), I have found users have seen the content I carefully created and visited businesses I have worked with on that first impression alone and have gone on to become valuable new customers.
